"Creating an Outdoor Oasis: Beautifying Your Chronic Waste Space"

As much as we all want our environment to be free of litter, there are still areas prone to chronic waste spots. These areas are often characterized by heaps of trash and debris, and they can diminish the aesthetic value of a place as well as negatively impact public health and safety. But with a little effort, we can all contribute to beautifying these chronic waste spots and make them a pleasant site for everyone.   One of the first things to consider when beautifying a chronic waste spot is to assess the scope of the clean-up. This will help us determine the resources and strategies that we need to employ to tackle the problem effectively. It is essential to coordinate with local authorities, waste collectors and other relevant stakeholders to ensure doorstep waste collection to the nearby citizens, solve the waste collection related issues. Monitor the location for few days so that now garbage is thrown by passerby at the spot. Another crucial consideration is the ki

Nurturing Proper Disposal Mechanism For E-waste Is The Need Of The Hour

Electronic products have become the indispensable part of our lives. Whether it is mobile phones, computers, laptops, tabs, battery chargers, ear pods or household appliances like ovens, washing machines, mixer-grinders, grillers, television sets, ACs, Home Theatres and electronic devices are assuming increasing importance in our personal as well as professional lives. Most of these items come in different price ranges and value added features attracting the brand conscious generation. These are no less than a fashion statement for many. And apart from these, technological advances encourage people to change their devices more often than ever before. Many of these devices therefore end up having a shorter life span. E-Waste the impending challenge But little do we realize that this is becoming an impending challenge. E-waste if not disposed properly can be toxic and harmful to humans as well as environment. While people are increasingly becoming aware of waste segregation, a

Increased citizen participation can help address the menace of potholes

Potholes are becoming a menace especially in the rapidly expanding urban areas. Not only do they affect the traffic flow but pose significant risk of injuries and accidents especially to two wheeler riders. This issue becomes even more evident during and after monsoons. The surface of the road gets washed away due to various reasons including quality of road construction, ageing of asphalt, traffic burden on the road etc. With monsoon filling these potholes with water, vehicle riders are unable to gauge the dept of the potholes leading to serious risks.  With Pune City expanding in all directions, increasing number of vehicles on the road, potholes have become a part of our day to day commuting.  Sometimes seamless commuting seems to be a distant dream and people express helplessness of the situation. The fact is that this issue is a challenge but not impossible to be addressed if public participation improves. We can keep on raising concerns with the civic bodies, but there a

Waste Negative Approach Will Bring About A Change On How We Deal With Public Spaces

There are different consumption patterns when it comes to food, apparels, different things they use in their day to day lifestyle and these are discarded at some point of time as waste. On home front this waste whether dry or wet can be managed, but what about common or community spaces? These are the places where there is a lot of public movement and large people gather and therefore individual behaviour and responsibility becomes all the more important. Some of the community spaces where people gather in large numbers are the different heritage spots like forts, or leisure tourist places like beaches, public parks etc.  Here we most likely see more litter. Although we can advocate and spread awareness, one just cannot keep fighting a lonely battle. There is a new trend coming up called   waste negative event . It is a very simple and common sensical approach.   What is a waste neutral approach? Whenever we go to these community or public places or go for picnics or treks, whatever

Urban Waste Management And Cleanliness Key To Sustainable Environment.

India is the growth engine of the world, the fastest growing economy in today’s times. To make the growth journey sustainable and amplify potential and opportunities, the need of the hour is to address the challenges that come with rapid growth. More than half of the population in progressive states now stay in urban areas. The rapid urbanization leads to generation of more waste including household waste, human waste, material waste like plastic and electronic waste. The increasing growth always outpaces our capacities to manage these wastes, so the city has to be ahead of the curve at all times and it is no easy task. The sustainable goals by the United Nations have given a definitive direction and highlight the prime importance of cleanliness and waste management for a sustainable environment and overall growth. In fact, Urban Waste Management will be one of the important pillars of a sustainable environment .   A livable city is one which has vibrant culture, growing economy,
