"Creating an Outdoor Oasis: Beautifying Your Chronic Waste Space"
As much as we all want our environment to be free of litter, there are
still areas prone to chronic waste spots. These areas are often
characterized by heaps of trash and debris, and they can diminish the
aesthetic value of a place as well as negatively impact public health
and safety.
But with a little effort, we can all contribute to
beautifying these chronic waste spots and make them a pleasant site for
everyone.
One of the first things to consider when
beautifying a chronic waste spot is to assess the scope of the clean-up.
This will help us determine the resources and strategies that we need
to employ to tackle the problem effectively. It is essential to
coordinate with local authorities, waste collectors and other relevant
stakeholders to ensure doorstep waste collection to the nearby citizens,
solve the waste collection related issues. Monitor the location for few
days so that now garbage is thrown by passerby at the spot. Another
crucial consideration is the kind of wastes that need to be removed.
Ensuring that the wastes are segregated and recycled to the maximum
extent possible can help minimize landfill waste and promote a more
sustainable environment. Finally, turning the waste spot into an
attractive site can involve several steps, such as landscaping, planting
trees and flowers, and installing benches and other amenities. These
activities can help revitalize the area, making it more inviting for the
public and reducing the likelihood of litter re-occurrence. In
conclusion, beautifying chronic waste spots is a multifaceted process
that requires collaboration, planning, implementation, and commitment.
In
Pune, Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative ( APCCI) along with Janwani
has been working continuously to eliminate the chronic spots and
beautify them. Till now a number of such chronic spots have been
eliminated.
The beautification process focusses on ‘Best out of
Waste.’ For the beautification almost everything is used including
existing waste materials such as used barrels, plastic bottles, tyres,
cement pipes, existing structure etc…. Since we are not
creating/producing any kind of material for the beautification and using
only existing waste materials, it shows that the beautification process
is totally environment friendly, in fact it gives the opportunity to
create beautiful structures from existing waste materials.
One
of the major achievements for the chronic spot elimination &
beautification process is the participation of volunteers/citizens.
APCCI has always taken the initiative to involve schools, colleges,
communities in this process. APCCI believes that ‘Behaviour Change &
Communication’ is one of the major factors of waste management.
By working together and employing the right strategies, we can help
ensure that our environment is safe, clean, and attractive for
generations to come.
