Nature Conservation begins at our doorstep

Every year on 28 July, Nature Conservation Day reminds us that protecting nature begins with each one of us. Conserving the environment is not just about planting trees or protecting wildlife—it also starts with how we manage the waste we generate every day. Improper waste disposal pollutes our land, water, and air, harming the environment and affecting our health. Good waste management helps reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, and create cleaner, healthier communities. The first step towards a sustainable future begins at home, where small everyday habits can make a big difference. As individuals, we can take simple yet meaningful actions. Segregate waste into wet, dry, and hazardous categories for proper disposal and recycling. Compost kitchen waste to reduce landfill waste and create natural manure for plants. Avoid single-use plastics by carrying reusable bags, bottles, and containers. Recycle paper, glass, metal, and plastic whenever possible, and choose products with le...

World Environment Day: Practical Steps Every Citizen Can Take to Reduce Waste and Protect the Environment

The environmental challenges facing India are becoming increasingly visible. From prolonged heatwaves and erratic rainfall to water scarcity, urban flooding, and growing pollution, the effects of climate change are now part of everyday life. Alongside these challenges, the country is also grappling with rising waste generation, with large quantities of plastic and mixed waste ending up in landfills, rivers, and public spaces. While policy changes and large-scale interventions are necessary, meaningful change also begins at the individual level. Simple, consistent actions adopted by millions of people can have a substantial impact on the environment. Segregate Waste at Source The most effective contribution any household can make is to separate wet waste, dry waste, and sanitary waste. Proper segregation improves recycling rates, reduces landfill burden, and enables better waste processing. Reduce Disposable Plastics Avoiding single-use plastic items such as carry bags, bottles, cups, a...

Image

International Biodiversity Day 22 May : Protecting Nature Begins at Home

Image
Every year, International Biodiversity Day reminds us that nature is not separate from our lives — it is the foundation of our survival. Clean air, fresh water, fertile soil, forests, rivers, birds, insects, and wildlife together create the balance that supports human life. However, increasing pollution and poor waste disposal are putting this biodiversity under serious threat. One of the biggest contributors to environmental damage is unmanaged waste. Plastic waste thrown on roads, hills, and riverbanks eventually reaches water bodies and natural habitats, harming animals, birds, and aquatic life. Waste burning and dumping also pollute the soil and air, affecting ecosystems across cities and villages alike. The good news is that protecting biodiversity can begin from our own homes. Simple habits such as segregating wet and dry waste, composting kitchen waste, reducing single-use plastic, and recycling responsibly can make a significant difference. Waste management is not...

World Ocean Day 2025

Our Oceans: Our Responsibility June 8th—World Ocean Day—is more than a day on the calendar. It's a time for reflection, a time for awareness, and most of all, a time for action. Our oceans cover over 70% of the planet's surface, support 80% of all life on Earth, and create over half the oxygen we breathe. They help regulate the climate, support billions of humans with livelihoods and food, and yield unparalleled beauty and biodiversity. And yet, the oceans are in crisis. The Current Reality: A Deepening Crisis Our oceans today suffer from alarming levels of pollution, overuse, and abandonment. Millions of tons of plastic trash are carried into rivers and oceans each year. Plastic bags and bottles to microbeads and fishing nets, this waste kills marine life throughout all levels of the food chain. Sea turtles confuse bags with jellyfish. Birds and fish eat plastic bits. Coral reefs are damaged by chemical runoffs. Worst of all, industrial effluent, raw sewage, agricultura...

Plastic Pollution – The Tide Can Be Turned

Plastic has become an integral part of our daily lives due to its low cost, lightweight nature, durability, and convenience. However, when misused or disposed of carelessly, it poses a serious threat to ecosystems, wildlife, marine environments, and even human health. The World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 June and highlights the importance of adopting sustainable practices for a better future. The theme this year is ‘ Ending Plastic Pollution’ According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), an estimated 19 to 23 million tonnes of plastic waste enter aquatic ecosystems—rivers, lakes, and oceans—every year (UNEP). The core issue with plastic is that, unlike organic materials, it doesn’t biodegrade. Instead, it breaks down into microplastics that linger in the environment for hundreds of years. Single-use plastics—such as straws, bags, and food packaging—are particularly problematic. Used for only a few minutes, they persist in nature for cent...
