Urban Waste Management And Cleanliness Key To Sustainable Environment.

India is the growth engine of the world, the fastest growing economy in today’s times. To make the growth journey sustainable and amplify potential and opportunities, the need of the hour is to address the challenges that come with rapid growth. More than half of the population in progressive states now stay in urban areas. The rapid urbanization leads to generation of more waste including household waste, human waste, material waste like plastic and electronic waste. The increasing growth always outpaces our capacities to manage these wastes, so the city has to be ahead of the curve at all times and it is no easy task.

The sustainable goals by the United Nations have given a definitive direction and highlight the prime importance of cleanliness and waste management for a sustainable environment and overall growth. In fact, Urban Waste Management will be one of the important pillars of a sustainable environment.

A livable city is one which has vibrant culture, growing economy, safety and security for all, healthy, clean and aesthetic. The picture seems to be perfect, not as easy to achieve.

A multipronged approach is what is needed. This includes waste segregation at source, sustainable solid waste management program, material waste collection and management program (plastic and electronic), sanitation and cleanliness, partnership of NGOs and private players to leverage technologies and improve outcomes  and in aiding and augmenting the initiatives.

The key to all of this is participation from the citizens. While awareness of the environment, climate change is increasing, many still think they are not responsible for the waste they generate. This is where the change should start happening and once behavioral change gains momentum, it will have a cascading effect on the entire goal of keeping the city clean and beautiful.
