Eliminating Chronic Spots Can Significantly Contribute To A Cleaner City

Garbage chronic spots (also called Garbage Vulnerable Points - GVP) are always a stark reminder of how much more work we all have to do when it comes to keeping our city clean.

What is a Chronic Spot?

We often come across some places in the city where we see garbage piled up. Even if the municipal vehicles collect garbage from these spots, these heaps of garbage again begin to reappear. Generally, a corner of any road, any empty public space or unguarded empty private space, side margins of roads become an ideal place for chronic spots.  These are spots where it becomes a habit for people to dispose off the waste, dry and wet. The heaps keep on piling up damaging the aesthetics of the area and also posing a lot of health risks for the local population there.

How to identify a Chronic Spot ?

If the waste generated by the locals is thrown in the open at a particular spot where it accumulates and keeps on piling up even after frequent cleaning, then it is called a Chronic Spot.  Many times a big function, get-together can also cause significant waste generation but once it is cleaned it is unlikely to reappear. Sometimes there is accumulation of garden waste or construction material . In such cases it does not become a chronic spot, but can turn into one if people start throwing garbage in the accumulated material .

How to eliminate a Chronic Spot ?

There are many of chronic spots which come into existence due to different reasons. These may include lack of a proper door to door collection system, people not ready to pay user charges etc. Eliminating chronic spots is a long process and requires relentless monitoring and work. The first step is to identify where the waste is coming from and at what time. Whether it is garbage thrown by people or nearby by hawkers, venders etc. Early mornings and late evenings are the peak timings where garbage keeps piling at such chronic spots. People have different problems and reasonings why they do not adhere to the waste pick up systems in place. On one hand NGOs, volunteers have to continuously monitor these spots and discourage people from throwing garbage and on the other hand they have to coordinate between the waste picking system and the local people to sort out their issues. This may require days or sometimes months.

What after the chronic spot is eliminated ?

Chronic spot is like a magnet and more garbage attracts more garbage. People tend to throw waste where garbage has already accumulated. Therefore once the chronic spot is eliminated , we need to beautify it immediately. In the last 6-7 years , Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative along with the local administrative bodies and NGOs has worked on more than 300 such chronic spots  and eliminated them along with educating the people.

There is no doubt that chronic spots damage the aesthetics of any city and therefore eliminating these can significantly contribute to a cleaner city .
