Why Earth Day Matters?

Every year people around the world celebrate ‘Earth Day’ on 22nd April . The day was proclaimed as International Mother Earth Day (https://www.unep.org/events/un-day/international-mother-earth-day-2025) through a resolution adopted in 2009. It is a powerful reminder that this planet is the only home we have, but this home is faced with deepening environmental challenges that need to be addressed urgently.

What a beautiful Planet!

One doesn’t’ need to travel far to experience this. It is just around us. Whether it is the hills with refreshing green cover and native trees, whether it is the water coming down the hills, colourful flowers, dense forests, whether it is the free-flowing river or the limitless oceans captivating the diverse ecosystems and marine life, whether it is the free flowing breeze that gives us the refreshing touch, every creation of the nature is a visual representation of its power and tranquillity.

But what have we done…

As humans we have made astounding progress, but have been indifferent to it’s effects on ecosystems and biodiversity. For years we neglected this and the results are in front of us- Climate Change, extreme weathers, heat waves, storms, chocked rivers, biodiversity loss, pollution and much more. The fact is that we are now faced with a multitude of challenges that need to be addressed not only by governments and corporations but also at an individual level and that too urgently. But not all is in the dark, people do realise the urgency, many corporations are adopting to green tech and renewable energy. But the challenges continue to accelerate. It is time to reflect on how far we have come and what we need to do-now ! It is time to understand that challenges aren’t distant, they are here and personal. Everybody in each corner of the world is affected.

The World is our common Home

We have only one planet and the world is our home. Just imagine do we want our world to be full of such challenges or a world where peace of nature, tranquillity reins.

Urgent Action, long-term goals

While we all are already facing the consequences of inaction, the message is clear- Urgent action and long-term goal of sustainability, isn’t an option, it is paramount for our own survival and of our mother earth. This will require multipronged approach at all levels from governments to companies to individuals. One doesn’t need to be a climate scientist or an environmental expert to make a difference. We can all start from our home, change habits and make a difference.  Some of the things we can easily do is

  • Segregate household waste
  • Compost kitchen waste
  • Reduce plastic use and support circular economy brands
  • Join a local clean-up or tree-planting event
  • Walk, bike, or use public transit whenever you can.
  • Switch to green energy providers
  • Switch to renewable energy
  • Create awareness about not only what needs to be done but also  the power of collective action

·         Dispose E Waste with an authorised service provider

·         Avoid / stop burning of any kind of waste

Collective power can make it happen

While Governments have already come together and making efforts towards mitigating climate change, it is the power of common people coming together that will make a difference. By uniting our resources, knowledge, we can transform our efforts into global movement. After all, the world is our home, who else will care ?
