Plogging- A Welcome Trend In Volunteering
Waste is not merely an environmental issue it leads to health issues as well as economic losses. Every year, the world generates billions of tons of waste, much of it is not disposed of correctly or goes through the necessary waste management processes. Although civic bodies collect and dispose off waste on a daily basis, the kind of scale we are dealing with is overwhelming. It can only be reduced with citizens’ participation and public awareness. And awareness starts with getting involved in tangible activities. Plogging is a relatively new sustainable movement created that mixes outdoor activities like jogging, trekking with activities that help safeguard the environment. In simple terms participants in plogging activities collect trash/ litter while doing outdoor activities and take them back for disposal. It is a great activity that combines fitness and cleanliness.
Benefits of plogging
The litter on the roads that nobody cares to pickup will
eventually end up trashed in the streams, river and eventually oceans resulting
into polluting the waters. Plogging can help tackle pollution and can
make the environment clean and better. Keeping the environment clean can
also help wildlife and other elements of nature healthy and safe. Considering
the scale of waste we deal with, Plogging can reduce the cost of
cleaning the public spaces and the saved money can be used in planning the
environment friendly programs.
How can one start plogging ?
One can simply register with NGOs or volunteers groups in nearby
localities and get involved. Plogging in a group or with friends and colleagues
can make volunteering experience much better. Not only will the physical
activity benefit the volunteer, it will help the nature significantly. One can
take images of activities and share them on social media. This will raise
awareness and encourage more individuals to participate.
