World Cleanup Day 2026: How Pune’s growing culture of volunteering is leading the way with Community Action

Pune is one of the fastest growing cities in India. On one hand the city’s rapid growth is bringing greater opportunities, but on the other hand  it also places increasing pressure on waste management systems and public spaces. Keeping our surroundings clean is therefore not just about aesthetics—it is essential to building a healthier, more sustainable and liveable Pune. This makes community-led clean-up efforts an increasingly important part of the city’s journey towards responsible waste management.

On World Cleanup Day 2026 ( 20 September 2026 ) , Pune offers a powerful example of how citizen participation can become a force for change. Across the city, an increasing number of volunteers and community groups are coming together over weekends to clean neighbourhoods, public spaces, riverbanks and other areas that are often impacted by litter. Many of these volunteers are college students or young professionals at the early stages of their careers. Come the weekend, instead of stepping away from civic responsibilities, these young people are stepping up—participating in cleanliness drives across Pune and redefining what weekends can look like.

These clean-up initiatives are more than just about collecting waste. They create awareness about responsible waste management and encourage people to think about what happens to waste after it leaves their hands. When communities come together to clean a space, they also begin conversations around reducing waste, segregating at source, preventing littering and keeping public spaces clean.

The Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative (APCCI) supports volunteer groups in their efforts by enabling cleanliness activities, promoting awareness and encouraging impactful action on the ground. Such collaborations help channel the enthusiasm of citizens into organised efforts that can create a visible and lasting difference.

The growing volunteer movement in Pune shows that change is possible when awareness is backed by action. Every clean-up drive can inspire another citizen, another neighbourhood and another community to take responsibility for its surroundings.

There is still a long way to go, but the volunteers and community groups across Pune are headed in the right direction—and their collective efforts can pave the way for a cleaner, more liveable city.
