Why Weekend Cleanliness Drives Matter for Pune?
Can Volunteers in Pune solve the challenges related to increasing waste ? What can a few hours on a Sunday morning really change? A weekend cleanliness drive cannot solve Pune’s larger waste management challenges on its own. Nor is it meant to. Its greater value lies in creating awareness and encouraging people to take ownership of the spaces they share. They are one part of a much bigger solution that includes responsible waste segregation, collection, processing and scientific disposal. But they play an important role in creating the awareness and public participation needed to make these systems work better. When someone picks up litter, they begin to think differently about littering. When a group comes together to clean a public space, it can inspire others to protect it.
This is where the road to sustainability begins—with awareness followed by action. Small acts, repeated consistently, can influence habits and build a stronger culture of responsibility.
When hundreds of Pune’s citizens, especially young people, choose to spend their weekends cleaning a riverside, a hill, a street or a public space, the impact goes beyond the waste that is collected.
Across Pune, volunteering groups and youngsters are increasingly turning their weekend mornings into community action. From riverbanks and hills to neighbourhood streets and public spaces, citizens are coming together to address litter and create awareness about responsible waste management. Clean-up activities are also being undertaken after large public events, including marathons, where community participation can help restore public spaces quickly.
The Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative (APCCI) supports and participates in such community-led efforts, working alongside volunteering groups and organisations across Pune. By enabling these initiatives, APCCI aims to encourage more citizens, particularly young people, to become active participants in building a cleaner and more sustainable city.
